Common Causes Of Throat Pain When Swallowing

It is not uncommon to experience throat pain once in a while when swallowing. This can be discomforting even in mild cases. This article examines possible causes of pain in the throat when swallowing.

According to Medical News Today, the following causes can lead to painful swallowing:

1. Throat infections. These are one of the most common causes of pain when swallowing. These include strep throat , which is an infection with a bacteria.

2. Tonsillitis. This is an infection and inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymph nodes at the back of the throat. Tonsillitis is a common cause of painful swallowing.

3. Epiglottitis. This is a throat infection that causes inflammation of the epiglottis, which is the flap in the back of the throat that prevents food from going down the windpipe.

4. Yeast. This is a type of fungus that can grow out of control if the conditions inside the body change in a way that promotes yeast growth. It can be in the mouth, throat, or food pipe and lead to discomfort swallowing.

5. Esophagitis. This is the information, swelling, or infection of the esophagus and is usually caused by gastric reflux conditions.

6. Throat injury. Though less common, it can cause pain on swallowing. This can also be caused by drinking or eating something that's too hot.

Treatment

This depends on the cause but includes the following:

1. Salt water. This may decrease inflammation and make swallowing less painful. Use it to gargle (hold in your mouth and back of the throat) for few minutes everyday.

2. Medication is the standard treatment for certain types of infection. See a doctor especially if home remedies do not effectively treat your pain.
