We are surrounded by plants, animals and a host of others which have all invariably been nothing short of blessings to us. Many of these natures best offer nutritional and health benefits to us, especially the plants which were used by the early man to meet his needs in terms of food and medicine. While the invention of technology has brought about processed plants and animal products, research has shown that such processed foods may not be good for the body in the long term, thus prompting renewed calls for a return to eating food in their natural forms.

The trio of tiger nuts, dates and coconut are three of the healthiest foods around us. Not only are they capable of being of immense help to the health and general wellbeing of many who utilise them, but they are also readily available and cheap, especially in light of the various health benefits we can derive from them. They are especially popular in Nigeria and many other African countries where they are mostly eaten raw. On an individual basis, each possesses numerous essential nutrients that are needed for the maintenance and functioning of the system.

Dates, despite their low protein content also pack quite the punch in terms of vitamins and minerals, with potassium, magnesium, copper, iron, manganese, vitamin B6 and antioxidants. Coconut is another darling in terms of important nutrients such as manganese, copper, selenium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, calorie and saturated fat.

From the individual nutritive values of the three foods, we can start having an idea of what a great team they would make when combined. Interestingly enough, many Nigerians seem to have realised the combined health benefits of the trio for many years, especially in the northern part of the country where they are blended and drank as a potent medicine for various conditions. But before we talk about the health benefit of the mixture, let's quickly see how we can make the drink.
