You might have thought that all sets of twins have the same biological fathers. You might have wondered if a set of twins can be from separate biological fathers. In this article, you will be able to find out.

A lot of people have always believed that all babies born from the same woman, on the same day have the same biological fathers. But, is that true? No, its absolutely not! Some, not all, have the same biological fathers. It is definitely possible for twins to have different fathers. This is due to a situation referred to as superfecundation.

Superfecundation is described as the fertilization of two or more eggs from the oestrous cycle by sperm from different acts of mating. Superfecundation can be of two types- Homopaternal superfecundation and Heteropaternal superfecundation.

Homopaternal superfecundation is the fertilization of of different eggs by sperm from the same man; while Heteropaternal superfecundation is a scenario where different eggs are fertilized by sperm from different men.

Normally, a woman will become pregnant when one of her eggs is fertilized by sperm. Fraternal twins on the other hand, occur when a woman releases more than one egg, which is fertilized by the same man. Fraternal twins are results of Homopaternal superfecundation.

When a woman has intercouse with two different men within a short period of time while ovulating, it is possible to be impregnated by both men. Yes, both men! The sperm from each man fertilizes an egg, resulting in twins from different fathers.

Twins from different fathers is a result of Heteropaternal superfecundation. In this case each child biologically belong to separate fathers in all ways. Their blood groups might be different from each other and each has characteristics of separate fathers.

Heteropaternal superfecundation is very rare as only few cases have been reported worldwide.
