National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Announced this morning, 28-04-2020 on their Twitter Official Page that non-medical face mask, which include self-made or commercial mask or face covers made of cloths, only reduce and not prevent the spread Covid-19.
The agency stated that face mask made with cotton material are more effective.
The agency further stated that, Non-medical face mask include self-made or commercial mask or face covers made of cloths or other textile materials such as papers, Are not standardised and are not intended for we in healthcare setting or by healthcare professionals.
They serve to limit spread of droplets and offer some measures of protection to those around you. The materials of construction is usually cloths (textile fabrics), non woven wadding, or paper-like materials. For these barrier masks 100% cotton is preferred through polyester, linen or knit fabrics can be used.
If wearer can put off a flame from a cigarette lighter that is placed in front of the Weaver, the mask is protective enough.
Barrier face mask don't prevent you from contracting disease but, they have been found to contribute to reduce spread of infections when used widely in conjunction with other measures. Such measures include social distancing, not touching the face, eyes or mouth, washing of hands with soap for 20 seconds or use of alcoholic base hand sensitizers.
These face mask are recommended to be washed daily and preferably should be a double layer of fabrics to increase the absorbency and effectiveness.
Note: Several washing, drying and stretching of the mask over time reduce the effectiveness of the mask.
The agency came out with the clarification as different state governments and federal government have announced compulsory use of face mask as the nation continues to fight against the spread of Covid-19..
