3 Side Effects Of Eating Foods High In Purine And 4 High-purine Foods To Watch Out For

Purines are one of the most common chemical compounds on earth and they are also found in the human body in two forms namely; exogenous and endogenous purines. Endogenous purines are made directly by the body, while exogenous purines are often absorbed by the body through the foods consumed. While the consumption of purine is not bad in itself, purines often break down into uric acid in the digestive system.

A buildup of uric acid in the body can happen due to excessive intake of purines. If uric acid remains in the body for a long time, it can crystallize and lead to certain health risks. These health risks often surface especially when the digestive system is unable to fully process and expel purines or you consume too many purines, leading to a buildup of uric acid in the body. This makes it important to watch your intake of foods high in purine content.

Some of the associated health risks of regularly consuming foods with high purine content are briefly discussed below:

1. Increased Diabetes Risk

High intake of foods rich in purines can lead to hyperglycemia, a condition in which there's an accumulation of uric acid in the bloodstream. This poses a threat to the body as high uric acid levels in the bloodstream is linked to an increased risk of diabetes.

2. Kidney Health

High intake of purines can cause uric acids in the kidneys to crystallise and harden to form kidney stones. This is especially dangerous, especially when the kidney stones are severe, leading to pain and needing surgical interventions to remove.

3. Arthritis and Gout

A buildup of uric acid from excessive consumption of purines can lead to gout, a kind of arthritis caused when deposits of uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints knees, or hands. Gout is a potentially serious issue as it is capable of causing serious discomfort and inflammation in the body.

Purines are very common and they are a constituent of many foods we eat, even the ones we consume too much. Eating foods with high purine content may predispose you to some of the health risks listed above. A few examples of foods with high purine levels that you should watch out for include:

1. Organ Meats

Organ meats such as kidney, liver and heart are very nutritious, their purine content is very high and should be consumed in moderation to avoid some of the health risks associated with high purine intake.

2. Alcohol

Beer is high in purines and its regular consumption is linked to increased levels of uric acid in the body, hence, alcohol must be consumed in moderation.

3. Seafood

People who love seafood should watch out for popular seafood such as sardines and anchovies, as both are particularly rich in purine.

4. Sweetened Beverages

Excessive intake of sugary drinks and sweetened beverages are linked to hyperuricemia, gout, and similar conditions, with their consumption capable of causing increased crystal deposits.
