The kidney is a very vital organ in the body that performs several roles. The kidneys are saddled with the responsibility of filtering minerals from the blood, maintaining overall fluid balance, excreting waste products, and regulating blood volume to name a few. That is why we need to keep them healthy. 

Kidney cancer is one of the most popular health conditions that affect the kidney. Kidney cancer which can also be called renal cancer is a disease in which kidney cells become malignant (cancerous) and grow out of control, forming a tumour. Almost all kidney cancers first appear in the lining of tiny tubes (tubules) in the kidney. This type of kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma. Kidney cancer in its advanced stage can kill hence try your best to avoid all the risk factors. 

There are certain signs your body gives you when you have kidney cancer. Some of them include; blood in the urine (hematuria), low back pain on one side (not caused by injury), a mass (lump) on the side or lower back, fatigue (tiredness), loss of appetite, weight loss not caused by dieting, fever that is not caused by an infection and that doesn't go away, etc. Seek medical attention once you start observing these signs. 

Certain things can cause kidney cancer. Some of them include; 

1. Smoking cigarette

Smoking is none of the major risk factors for kidney cancer and other types of cancers. Your risk for kidney cancer increases with the amount of tobacco you smoke and the length of time you smoke. Smoking can also damage your lungs hence avoid it. 

2. Alcohol

Alcohol in a moderate amount is healthy for the body but excess of it can damage the kidney. Studies have shown that the more alcoholic drinks people consume, the higher the risk of many cancers including kidney cancer. Reduce the amount of alcohol you consume to keep your kidney healthy. 

3. Red meat

Research has shown that people who eat lots of red meat may have a higher risk of some types of kidney cancer. Red meat can also cause colorectal and pancreatic cancer hence avoid it.
