The Real Truth Behind The Sinking Of The Titanic

I remember in 1997, when the movie "Titanic" came out. Everybody feel in love with the movie. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It was the movie of the year! It was acted so well, that it seemed so real. But coming back to real life, you would see that that the movie truly depicted the scenes of the sunken ship. And to that, it brings us to the actual event, itself.

10th of April 1912, announced the entrance of the largest ocean liner in service at that time, RMS Titanic. It was said to have started its voyage from Southampton. Carrying at least 2,224 people on board, including a number of prominent personalities, the luxury ship was nicknamed ‘Millionaire’s Special’, and was on its way to New York City on that day. Cruising on sea seemed to be the order of the day, during those days. It was what they considered at the moment to be relaxation.

The ship was supposedly designed to be the most fantastic in style and safe, as of the time, any way. And the vessel featured many advanced luxury and safety features. And to ensure the safety and give confidence to the passengers on board, the ‘unsinkable’ RMS Titanic was commanded by a senior captain; 62 year old Captain Edward Smith. He was like the demi-god of the ship, because the lives on hundred's were in his hands.

However, unexpected, and taken unawares the destiny of this unfailing and amazing ship took it's worse turn that day, which nobody would have ever expected. On the 14th of April, the world witnessed the most deadly civilian maritime disaster; the sinking of the great Ship Titanic. Little did anyone know on board, that at around 11.40 PM, the Titanic would strick an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland and begin to sink.

No sooner at about 2.20 AM on the morning of the 15th, the biggest and spectacular ship, as it was called had seem to have settled to the bottom of the North Atlantic.

What a dreadful way to die. The sea, the sinking of the ship and the cold weather were enough to take the lives of 1517 passengers and crew on board. Out of the whole 2,224 passengers on board, just 706 of them survived the ordeal to tell the horrific and sad tale to the world. The rest were gone under the heavy and deadly waters, never to be seen again.

When the news of the Titanic disaster reached land, there was shock and confusion among people. Many had wondered what possibly could have gone wrong. Many were stunned and with many questions that needed answers to the accident.

As usual, many legends and conspiracy theories arose almost immediately after the accident concerning those who died and survived, and also on the cases that lead to the sinking of the ship.

The question that baffled many even up until today, was how did the Titanic sink in spite of having the best technical design available at the time? Scientists and researchers, still could not make sense out of it.

Immediately after the Titanic had sunk, investigations began by two separate known groups such as the United States Senate and the British Board of Trade. The U.S inquiry was headed by Senator William Alden Smith and the British one by Lord Mersey.

Well, the survivors had a lot to tell after going through a life and death experience. Every individual gave their versions of the tragedy and the investigations were concluded quickly.

The results of the investigations revealed that the ship itself was found short on a few of the standards.

A touching and heart felt story, I must say. I can only imagine how these innocent people struggled to stay alive. But at the end of it all, " nature" had it's way. May all that were gone, rest forever in peace.
