In today's world, there are lots of people who smoke cigarettes almost on a daily basis. Such people may or may not be aware of the long term damage they may be incurring from smoking.

Well, this article will talk about a common type of cancer caused by smoking which you may not know about.

Amongst several other types of cancers which can be caused by smoking, lung cancer happens to be the commonest and number one risk factor which contributes about 90% of this disease.This is because cigarettes contain harmful substances like nicotine. Nicotine is the substance that makes it so addictive by producing the type of sensation which smokers enjoy.

Other harmful substances contained in cigarettes are arsenic, lead, formaldehyde, ammonia and the rest. All these chemicals are really very dangerous to health.

So when the cells around the lung becomes malignant, get damaged and begin to grow without control, then lung cancer has definitely set in.

This uncontrollable growth forms tumour which grow and affect respiration making it difficult for the person to breathe. It is important to note that this tumour growth does not stop around the lungs.

It would eventually spread to other parts of the body causing other cancers such as cancer of the throat, pharynx, colon, liver, kidney, stomach etc. Smoking can also cause heart problems which may lead to stroke and death.

From what has been explained here, it is clear that smoking is doing serious damage to our health more than we can imagine.

This is the reason why there is a warning note on the packets of cigarettes which reads that, "smokers are liable to die young or smoking causes lung cancer".
