5 Common Medical Challenges That Affect Older People

1. Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterised by high blood sugar. Diabetes can affect many organs. It is very important to maintain these health issues because they can lead to heart diseases, stroke, kidney diseases, and so on. Diabetes symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst, and hungry, weight, and others.

2. Hypertension

High blood pressure is called hypertension. It is a condition when the blood vessels raised pressure. The vessels carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Whenever the heart beats, it pushes blood into the veins. The force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels (arteries) creates blood pressure. Stroke, heart attack, and heart failure are the most common causes of death and disability among older people.

3. Arthritis

Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children. Arthritis causes swelling and discomfort in joints. It also causes joint pain and stiffness, which usually becomes worse with age. Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis arthritis are the most common types. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage, the firm, slippery substance that covers the ends of bones that breaks down. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system attacks the joints which start with the lining.

4. Dementia

Dementia is a term for a collection of symptoms of cognitive decline such as language, attention, problem-solving, memory, decision-making, and recognition that interferes with your daily activities. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older people, although there are others. Dementia is among the leading causes of disability among older people.

5. Oral health

Oral health affects older people's quality of life and overall health. Tooth loss, tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer are common among the issues experienced by older people. Oral discomfort affects sleep and the ability to relax.
