#ENDSARS Anniversary: 2 Things That Made October 20, 2020 An Unforgettable Date In Nigeria's History

There is no doubt that each day that passes becomes part of history. However, some days do not pass without creating an unforgettable memory in the hearts of people. This can be argued to be the case of October 20, 2020, when the protest by Nigerian youths, against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the police, went south at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos state. The event which is a-year-old today, has seen many Nigerian youths, warming up to stage an anniversary rally to commemorate their ugly experience during the #ENDSARS protest.

The planned protest to mark the one-year anniversary of #ENDSARS has continued to generate mixed reactions from the public. This is due to events that happened on October 20, 2020, and the fear that if care is not taken, the anniversary protest could lead to a repeat of last year’s experience. However, to everyone in Nigeria, there are two things that happened on October 20, 2020, which have set the date aside as an unforgettable date in the history of Nigeria, and can be argued to be behind the planned anniversary protest. These two things are:

1. The shooting of #ENDSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos

To the #ENDSARS protesters, the ugly incident which saw men of the Nigeria Army open fire at the peaceful protesters who had gathered at the Lekki Toll Plaza, will forever remain an unforgettable event throughout their lifetime. The incident which took place on October 20, 2020, arguably turned the once-peaceful #ENDSARS protest, into a bloody one, and marked the beginning of a nationwide violence that led to the destruction of properties worth millions of Naira.

2. Hijacking of the #ENDSARS protest by hoodlums

Arguably, the ugly event that took place at the Lekki Toll Plaza on October 20, 2020, created rooms for hoodlums to hijack the #ENDSARS protest, and unleashed terror in different states across the country. It was the day that the protest slipped away from the hands of the organizers, with hoodlums taking the advantage to loot warehouses and businesses, burning down buildings and vehicles belonging to government, and politicians in different parts of the country.

While it is true that many things went wrong during the #ENDSARS protest across the country in October 2020, it can be argued that the 20th of October 2020 is a date that millions of Nigerians will never forget in a hurry. Aside from the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos, it equally marked the point where the peaceful #ENDSARS protest, degenerated into a nationwide violence that almost consumed the country, forcing the then Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to disband the SARS with immediate effect.
