(Opinion) Why I think Falz Should Not Encourage Nigerians to Engage in Endsars Memorial Protest

During the annual Felaberation concert on Sunday, October 17, popular Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz, encouraged Nigerian youths to disregard the Nigeria Police, and come out for the planned Endsars memorial protest, which is scheduled to take place on October 20.

The Endsars memorial protest which was organized to remember those that lost their lives during the Endsars protest back in 2020, was kicked against by the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who insisted that no protest will hold in Lagos.

After taking a close study how the first Endsars protest in 2020 went, I think Falz should not encourage Nigerians to partake in any protest. Althought the right to protest is constitutionally stated in section 38 of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended, I still feel the Endsars memorial protest should not be encouraged. Considering the fact that during the 2020 protest there was breakdown of law and order, as the protest was reportedly hijacked by hoodlums that turned the peaceful protest to an avenue where they can steal and destroy public properties, I think staging another protest will not be a good idea.

Also, I want to state that during the Endsars protest in 2020, there were reported cases of violence, leading to loss of lives of protesters, which is one reason why I strongly suggest that Falz should not encourage Nigerians to engage in another protest. Considering the security challenges Nigeria is faced with, I feel staging a protest at this period may endanger lives.

Finally, what I think Falz should have done instead of encouraging Nigerians for another protest, is to use his position to educate Nigerians on how to be involved in the politics of the country, by exercising their franchise in the coming elections. I feel Nigerians should be encouraged to be actively involved in Nigeria politcs by using their Personal Voters Cards (PVCs) to vote their preferred candidates they feel can represent their common interests, instead planning another protest.
