IPOB Trial: Only The Court Can Decide Kanu's Fate

The Federal High Court has again adjourned the case of Mr Nnamdi Kanu for more weeks. As expected, this decision has attracted mixed reactions from people, especially across social media platforms. It is obvious that only the federal court has the authority to decide or adjudicate the fate of Mr Kanu. It is unfortunate that some people are sharing unverified claims across social media platforms. The court decision will always be final because it is the law.

It is the responsibility of the government to charge people for their actions but only the judiciary can adjudicate and decide the fate of a person on trial. It is the Federal High Court that ordered the continuous detention of Kanu by the Department of State Services (DSS). The intelligence police often allow his lawyers to access and Interact with him as opposed to some unverified narratives across social media platforms. For instance, prior to Kanu's latest court appearance, his lawyers were granted access to determine his medical conditions etc.

The federal government has charged Mr Nnamdi Kanu with treasonable felony among other charges. This is a serious issue that judicial officers require time to study. The laws are not simply interpreted in a hurry. Perhaps this is why the presiding judge adjourned the case for a couple of weeks. In the meantime, people must desist from sharing unverified claims regarding the well being of Kanu. There are many civil society organisations monitoring the court proceedings to ensure transparency and fairness.

Nigeria's Department of State Services is a domestic intelligence agency that is saddled with the responsibility of tackling or neutralising all domestic threats that may affect national security. In similar operations in the past, the agency has nabbed high profile Boko Haram terrorists and other notorious criminals such as Kabir Sokoto who once masterminded a bomb explosion in the capital city of Abuja.
