Following the report that Supreme Court has extended the use of the old N200, N500 and N1000 notes within the country, A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof itse Sagay has reacted. According to him, there could be consequences of Emefiele has not directed Banks to obey supreme court decision
It could be recalled that the Supreme Court has extended the use of the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes through December 31, 2023. A seven-member panel of the court led by John Okoro unanimously directed that the CBN must continue to receive the old notes from Nigerians
However, while reacting to the new development, Itse Sagay said "The CBN does not need anyone to give it instructions to obey a judgment because it is an agency of the Federal Government.
“So, if the CBN has not yet directed banks to obey the Supreme Court decision, it means that the governor Godwin Emefiele is committing contempt of court and there could be consequences for that"
