The Difference between what Malami said today and what his Aide said concerning Twitter Violators

The Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has said today that he is not against Nigerians who are still using Twitter despite the suspension of the platform by the federal government.

According to Abubakar Malami, it is the fundamental right of every Nigerian to tweet from anywhere in the world and he did not order for their arrest.

He said that the federal government is after companies and entities who are trying to help Twitter to escape the ban that was placed on it.

"For the record, let it be made amply clear that the AGF, Abubakar Malami, is not after any Nigerian, tweeting from Nigeria or anywhere in the world but that any Nigerian company or entity that gives a helping hand for Twitter to escape the ban placed on it, will be dealt with." Abubakar Malami said.

This is clearly contrary to what his spokesman, Umar Jibrilu Gwandu said on Saturday. Recall that Umar Jibrilu Gwandu said that Abubakar Malami has ordered the immediate prosecute of the violators of the Twitter de-activation operations in the country.

"Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria,” Umar Jibrilu Gwandu said.

From my own point of view and analysis, the two statements contradict each other, Abubakar Malami says he is not against individuals who are still using Twitter but against companies and organizations that are trying to help Twitter to circumvent the suspension.

Whereas his spokesman said violators of the Twitter suspension which simply refers to those who are still using the app despite the suspension.

There is clearly a difference between what Abubakar Malami said today and what his aide said on Saturday.

It is therefore surprising and the big question is whether his spokesman made the statement on his own personal capacity or on behalf of his boss who is represents.
