Bayelsa: Olugbobiri Youths in Southern Ijaw Local Government Protest Over Lack of Basic Amenities

The people of Olugbobiri kingdom in Southern Ijaw local government of Bayelsa State has come out in their numbers to protest against the backwardness and stagnation in the community owing to environmental degradation.

The protesters expressed displeasure over lack of meaningful development in the area, noted that since the discovery and exploration of oil in 1973 in the kingdom, there is no tangible development and basic social amenities to show.

They called on the Nigeria Agip Oil company, NAOC, Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC and the government to heed to their cries and not play politics with their survival.

Speaking during the protest, Ebiere Abel a female agitator noted that the women are been neglected to face their fate. She further advocated for a deliberate empowerment of the girl child in the kingdom so as to manage the total dependence on men for survival.

She buttressed that fishing and farming which is the major source of livelihood is been bastardized by oil exploration activities thereby making life difficult to live, she demanded for basic amenities and empowerment of the Olugbobiri girl child

Also comrade Teide Wakaman blames the underdevelopment of the Olugbobiri kingdom to selfish leaders who are willing to keep the people in darkness and bondage just to en-mass wealth for themselves and immediate families.

They also warn those collecting monies from the multinational Oil companies operating in the area for their well being, at the detriment of the people to desist as every member of the community have equal right to the collective resources of the Kingdom.

Finally marking the third day of the protest, the community youth laments that enough is enough that they are not going to stop protesting until their demands are met because they also deserve the good things that comes will black gold
