Nnamdi Kanu Has Been Brought To Court Amid Heavy Security Said To Be Over 3000 In Number

The Leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has finally been brought to court to face trial.

Kanu was brought to the Federal High Court Abuja amid heavy security presence in and around the venue where the trial will take place. According to a report by The Punch, the heavy security is made up of men of the Nigeria Police, men of the Nigerian Army and men of the Department Of State Services (DSS). It added that the security agents are over 3000 (three thousand) in number guarding the premises where Kanu is facing trial.

Journalists, some lawyers and other staff of the court court were barred from entering the court premises. The tight security measures taken may not be unconnected with past instances where IPOB members and other supporters of Kanu trooped to court venue where the trial is taking place. There is the need to fortify the venue and ensure that there is no break down of law and order.

Controversies surrounding Kanu's trail

Kanu's trial has been a subject of serious controversies. One of the main issues that generates controversy about his trail is the fact that his legal team, family and IPOB members are demanding for open trial. They insist that as a citizen, Kanu is entitled to open/public and fair trial where his legal team can offer him the defense he deserves as provided by the law. They kick against subjecting him to trial off camera and behind closed doors. Will this demand for open/public trial of Kanu be granted?

Another thing that generated controversy was the refusal to bring Kanu to court for some days. There were days the federal government failed to bring Kanu to court for trial. That development raised eyebrows from his family members, legal team and his supporters as they wondered is all is well. They demanded that Kanu should be brought to court as required by law as the accused cannot be tried in his absence when he is in the custody of the government. Well, this issue has been resolved as Kanu was brought to court today.

Finally, Kanu's condition in custody has been another issue of controversy. Many of his supporters and family members want to be sure that he is not being subjected to some conditions that may affect his health. This issue came to the fore when his family, legal team and supporters were barred from seeing him. Bringing him to court may help to settle some of these issues.
