EndSARS Memorial Protest: How The Nigerian Police Can Avoid Having Thugs Hijack Any Protest

One year down the line after the October 2020 EndSARS protest, youths in some states of the federation had yesterday came out in their numbers to commemorate the day.

Heavy presence of youths in their vehicles and on foot were seen in majorly Lagos and Abuja. The memorial protest, as captured, had the youths calling for the fulfilment of the agreement reached in 2020.

Notwithstanding, at some point during the protest, the Lagos State Police Command made some arrest and also alleged that some youths were caught with weapons, such as matchets and harmers.

To this effect, we shall be looking at how the Nigerian police can avoid or prevent thugs from hijacking any protest in the country.

Educated and well-trained policemen

The Nigerian police should ensure that educated and well-trained policemen are well positioned in the protest venue.

These policemen should be very sensitive, tactical and well-trained to know how to identify a thug or hoodlum from a distance before he/she start causing any trouble.

Discuss with the protesters

Note that the police are duty bound to protect the rights of every civil society. This means that they are not to stop peaceful protesters from protesting, as it is their constitutional rights.

In this case, the police should discuss with the protesters and work out modalities on how to make the protest peaceful. They can decide to outline areas or boundaries the protest should not extend to.

If the police should adhere to this, the rate at which hoodlums hijack protest will be drastically reduced or eliminated completely.
