The defendant, Nnamdi Kanu who has been in DSS custody since his recapture, was produced in court today, at the federal high court Abuja. He pleaded "not guilty" to the 7 point amended charges levelled against him.
According to his lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, while speaking with the press, stated that the charges constituted no offense and has no basis in law. He then went ahead to disclose how they filed a motion to challenge the legitimacy of the charges, which they intend to get quashed.

So, the case was adjourned to 10th November, then the decision on whether the charges made sense or not will be taken.
Having given the reader the summary of what transpired at the federal high court today, let us now go to the main aim of this article.
Two things that did not go as expected.
1. Press blackout
For a high profile like this, it is expected, that everything be done in a transparent manner. It is expected that everybody be carried along, to mitigate the issues of foul play or claims of such. This is why the press are always involved.
The press are expected to be allowed and given access to provide authentic information on the proceedings. This however, did not happen in this case.
The DSS did not allow the press anywhere near the courtyard till after the court session was over. They could only interview lawyers outside, and this means they have little to no information on what really happened inside the court.

2. Back to DSS custody.
Many Nigerians expected him to be moved to a correctional facility, but that did not happen.
The difference is that, in a correctional facility, there is constitutionally supported access to him, by his friends and family, which is not very possible with the DSS.
The reason given for denying his lawyers request and what is expected (which is moving him to a correctional facility), is that it is for his own security. While we can not argue their reason, we know it is an irregularity. People charged to court for not go back to DSS custody, rather they go to a correctional facility or prison.
3. Ohaneze representatives were not allowed inside.
Ohaneze ndiigbo representatives, who went to witness their brothers trial were prevented from entering the court. They granted an interview and called it a "secret trial". It is wrong and a bad signal, to prevent those who were there to provide emotional support to the defendant from gaining access to the trial.
Now, with the above outcome, one begins to wonder, will things ever go as planned in Nigeria?.
The judiciary is expected to be independent and impartial, but these events are nothing short of contradictory.
