Travellers making use of Port Harcourt - Owerri road in Omagwa area of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State earlier today met the road totally blocked by truck drivers after one of their member was reportedly beaten by a Nigerian Army at the checkpoint for refusing to pay certain amount of money.

The action of the security officer against an unarmed driver has brought lot of discussion and condemnation from Nigerians on social media and on radio with some people worried why a security officer will assult a citizen whom he supposed to protect.

The protest by truck drivers belonging to Freight Forwarders Transport Association (FFTA) saw all the major roads at Omagwa totally blocked as as those going to Owerri could not continue their journey. The same as those coming to Rivers State and those going to the airport could not continue their journey as all the roads were totally blocked with heavy duty vehicles by members as FFTA.

After several hours, it took the intervention of Ikwerre Local Government Chairman, Samuel Nwanosike to plead with the protesting drivers to give peace a chance.

Samuel Nwanosike told the protesting truck drivers that he will ensure that there will be no repeat of what happened in his Local Government Area.

Speaking with the BelieveallBlog, the Chairman of Freight Forwarders Transport Association, Idris Ali lamented the continued harassment of members by security operatives.

Mr Idris Ali also confirm to us that the beaten member of FFTA was in the hospital receiving treatment.

He therefore called on the relevant authorities to do all they can do to ensure the ugly incident from the Security agencies never happen again especially, to drivers who are using different road in many parts of the country.

We were able to get the photo of Mr. Chukwuebuka taking medication in the hospital after he was beaten by a Nigerian Army at Port Harcourt - Owerri army checkpoint for allegedly refusing to pay certain amount of money:

What do you think of the action of the Army at the checkpoint?

Are men of Nigerian Army supposed to be collecting money from motorists at checkpoint?
