EFCC Arrests Ex-Kwara Gov, Abdulfatah Ahmed

The immediate past governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Sources at the anti-graft agency disclosed that the former governor is currently being grilled by a crack team of operatives at the headquarters of the EFCC in Jabi district of Abuja.

Ahmed was said to have arrived the EFCC headquarters at about 10am on Monday, May 17, 2021, in response to the invitation extended to him by the anti-graft agency.

The sources stated that the former governor was drilled for over seven hours, where he has been making useful statements.

Though details of the case is still sketchy as at press time, the sources further disclosed that it was not unconnected with how funds to the tune of about N9billion were diverted from the coffers of Kwara State government during his tenure as governor between 2011 and 2019, and including his tenure as commissioner for finance under the administration of a former governor of the state, Bukola Saraki.

Spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that the former governor responded to the commission’s invitation but declined further comment.

Lagos to become major tourism destination in Africa

Lagos State Government on Monday reiterated its commitment to make Lagos the major tourism destination in Africa through a Tourism Master Plan

This was disclosed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf at a ministerial briefing held at Alausa, Lagos.

She said the series of activities of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture under the present administration is deliberately structured towards positioning Lagos State as a major tourism destination in Africa.

The Commissioner disclosed that the Tourism Master Plan, a document to revolutionise the tourism sector in the State, would be presented next month.

We have maintained a better relationship with our stakeholders, developing policies that would guide tourism activities and also implemented programmes and projects as they relate to the fulfilment of the fifth pillar of the THEMES agenda of the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which is Entertainment and Tourism.

“We have equally identified the business side of entertainment and tourism.

”Beyond using tourism and entertainment for fun, relaxation, social integration, entertainment and tourism remain a major source of income generation for different countries and cities of the world and we will also leverage this aspect to boost the State’s IGR (Internal Generated Revenue).

We believe in creating an enduring atmosphere for tourism activities to thrive, being a majorly private-sector driven sector.

Sheikh Dahiru blasts El-Rufai over treatment of Quranic students

Renowned Islamic scholar in Bauchi state, Sheikh Dahiru, has berated Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai over what he described as unfair treatment of Quranic students in Kaduna.

He spoke when he received former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who paid him a courtesy visit at his residence on Monday.

The Nation reports Sanusi had sought the renowned scholar’s blessings following his appointment as new ‘Khalipa of Tijjaniya Islamic sect in Nigeria’

According to the Sheikh, he would have refused El-Rufai entry into his residence if he had come with the entourage of the former Emir of Kano.

Where is El-Rufa’i? I thought he will be in your entourage. I would have asked my guards not to allow him to step into this compound.

“He chased Quranic students away, dumped them in the bush far away from town, came back to my house and harassed the occupants just because they were Quranic recites.

” I am not happy over this action taken by the El-Rufa’i. It is an affront to me and I did not do anything to deserve such a treatment.”

Sanusi said Sheikh Dahiru was the first religious leader he visited since his confirmation as the new Khalipa of the movement in the country.

The former Kano Emir appealed for forgiveness on El-Rufai’s behalf, saying he was sure the Governor was not aware of what transpired.

He however, promised to foster unity among the members of Tijjaniya in the country and adherents of other sects and faiths.

Don’t take sides in Middle East conflict, CAN tells Buhari

The Christian Association of Nigeria has called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to ensure that Nigeria does not take sides with either of the warring factions in the ongoing violence in the Middle East.

The association made the call in a statement on Monday signed by its National Secretary, Daramola Bade.

The statement was titled ‘Nigeria should not pitch tent against Israel – CAN.’

Recall that President Recep Erdogan of Turkey had told Buhari on the telephone that he expected Nigeria to show solidarity with Palestinians following the latest attacks by Israel on Jerusalem and Gaza.

The Turkish President had told Buhari that his country was trying to get the international community to teach Israel, which he described as “unlawful, unjust and unscrupulous,” a lesson, adding that he believed that Nigeria will support Palestinians in “this rightful cause.”

But CAN called on the international community to intervene in the crisis without taking sides if they truly wanted an enduring peace.

The statement read, “The Christian Association of Nigeria has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against joining Arab world in fighting Israel in the ongoing violence in the Middle East as advocated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey because Nigeria is a secular state.

“Erdogan reportedly called ‘for the international community to teach the necessary lesson to unlawful, unjust and unscrupulous Israel due to its attacks against Palestine, President Erdogan voiced his belief that Nigeria would show solidarity with the Palestinians in this rightful cause.’

“We are worried that Nigeria which was wrongly labelled an Islamic State because of her unlawful membership of the Organisation of Islamic Conference has been taking side with the Palestinians since the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari, hence why the Turkish President asked Nigeria to identify with the Palestinians.
