Court rejects Abba Kyari’s associate’s bail request

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an appeal by an associate of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari – Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Sunday J. Ubua – in which he sought to be admitted to bail.

Justice Stephen Adah, in the lead judgment, held that the appellant placed no new materials before the court to warrant it departing from the earlier decision on the issue by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Adah proceeded to affirm the ruling by Justice Nwite, rendered on March 28, 2022 rejecting Ubua’s application for bail on the grounds that the prosecution placed sufficient materials before the court to warrant its rejection of the bail application.

Ubua is standing trial with Kyari and three other former members of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Force Investigation and Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on charges relating to unlawful dealing in drugs and attempting to tamper with evidence.

Crystal Palace sack manager

Crystal Palace have confirmed that Patrick Vieira has been sacked as the club’s first-team manager.

The Arsenal FC legend was hired by the club on July 4, 2021, in a three-year contract following the departure of their previous manager, Roy Hodgson, who served the club since 2017.

Following his recent poor performance in about 12 successive matches since the beginning of 2023, taking the Eagles teetering above the Premier League relegation zone, with a three-point gap separating them from 18th-placed Bournemouth.

In a statement from the club’s chairman, Steve Parish, on Friday which was obtained from their website by The PUNCH, it partly read, “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made.

Gunmen attack Folarin’s ancestral home in Ibadan

Gunmen, on Thursday night, attacked the ancestral home of the All Progressives Congress APC, governorship candidate in Oyo state, Teslim Folarin in Oja’gbo, Ibadan Southeast Local Government Area of the state.

According to eyewitnesses account, the gunmen in about 10 Toyota Hilux with covered number plates invaded the Oja’gbo Palace of Senator Folarin few minutes past 8:00pm on Thursday night.

A survivor, who did not want his name in print said: “We escaped death by whiskers but several of us sustained varying degrees of injuries as we scampered for safety.”

Soldier, Several Others Killed As Gunmen Attack Niger Communities

A soldier has been killed following an attack by gunmen on communities in Paikoro and Munya Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Niger State.

The gunmen who launched a fresh onslaught also killed a village head and a medical practitioner, and abducted well over 60 people, including women and children.

Numbering about 100, the assailants in two separate groups were said to have invaded the two neighbouring communities of Beni in Munya LGA and Adunu in Paikoro LGA in broad daylight on Monday and raided from house to house, dispossessing the people of their money, other valuables and food stuff.

At Beni, the group killed the Village Head, Alhaji Salihu Ahmed when they sighted him on his way back from the farm and abducted about 20 people, mostly women and children.
