Emeka Ihedioha's New Yam Celebration: A True Show of The Love Between Him And Mbaise People

Mbaise people occupy 3 out of the 27 local government areas in Imo State. They are found in Ahiazu, Aboh, and Ezinihitte local government areas. The people are known to celebrate new yam festival on the 15th day of August each year. The 2019 edition of the New Yam Festival, or Iri Ji Mbaise as it is fondly called, marked the first and only time a son of Mbaise would grace the occasion as the Executive Governor of Imo State. That was before Emeka Ihedioha was removed from office by the Supreme Court.

Just like every other event that attracts large number of people, the 2020 edition of Iri Ji Mbaise could not hold due to the lockdown caused by the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to hold the Mbaise New Yam Festival in 2020, the 2021 edition witnessed a new dimension to the age-long cultural event, which has often been rotated among the three local government areas that made up Mbaise.

The 2021 New Yam Festival saw Emeka Ihedioha, a native of Mbaise, take it upon himself to celebrate new yam festival in his country home. It is no doubt that before now, almost every other Mbaise man equally celebrate the event that marks the beginning of harvests with his family. However, Emeka Ihedioha's new yam celebration on the 15th of August 2021 was more of a show of true love between him and his people.

It is arguable that the massive turnout of people and the funfair at the new yam festival hosted by Emeka Ihedioha has further shown that despite his removal from office as the Executive Governor of Imo State, there is still a strong love between him and Mbaise people. Recall that since he was removed from office, some of his allies, particularly those in the State's House of Assembly, have continued to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), while the love many had for him have continued to wax cold.

Arguably, this is not the case in Mbaise, where Emeka Ihedioha is still held in high esteem. This explains why many people turned out to celebrate the new yam festival with him. Considering the crowd that were at his residence to celebrate the new yam festival with him, one may not be wrong conclude that indeed, the festival is a true show of the love between Emeka Ihedioha and Mbaise people.
