Life Lesson: Cultivate A Positive Attitude

This saying by William James "The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes," was not only true in his generation. But even today, the mind continues to be the engine that runs the life of every human being.

Simply put attitude is a settled way of thinking or feeling about something. This thinking or feeling reflects in action or behavior. Therefore, there is an intimate connection between thought and attitude. Actually, the two are inseparable.

You are what you think. What you are is the sum of all the thoughts that you have allowed to dominate your mind. Your mind is like soil and thoughts are the seeds you plant on it. If you plant positive thoughts in your mind, you reap positive attitude. This quotation from James Allen drives the message home "A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts."

However, if you plant negative thoughts, you inevitably reap negative attitude. Nature is just, you can never reap what you have not sown.

Your attitude determines your altitude in life. But, a negative attitude is like a flat tire, it cannot get you anywhere. It is important we guard our minds and ensure that the right thoughts are planted on the soil of our minds.

The good news is that you can control the kind of thoughts that run through your mind. Again James Allen has this to say "...man is the master of thought, the molder of character, and the maker and shaper of condition, environment and destiny."

You are the master of your thoughts. This is possible because God gave you a freewill. Freewill gives you the power to make choices. If you choose to plant the right thoughts on your mind, you reap the right attitude. Whatever will be seen in your attitude depends on which thought you have chosen, whether positive or negative.

Majority of people don't want to believe or accept that they have power over their thoughts. They believe that thoughts are spontaneous. So, nobody can exercise any power over them. How wrong they have been. This kind of thinking has led to many people losing control over their attitude and actions.

You can choose your attitude by choosing the thoughts you allow to dominate your mind. You have power to choose your attitude because you can choose your thoughts. What you call attitude is a reflection of what thoughts have been going on in your mind.

If you learn the fact that you can choose your attitude, perhaps, even for you, this will be the greatest discovery of your life.
