The controversial Islamic cleric and scholar, Sheikh Gumi has weighed in on the increasing calls for the Federal Government to declare the acts of banditry in the Northwestern region as terrorism. These calls were orchestrated by the increasing number of casualties recorded in the region because of banditry. Their attacks have been so severe and brutal that the security agencies have to suspend telecommunications services in the region, to enable them checkmate the increasing insurgence in the region. With this, many people are of the view that it is hightime the Federal Government identified bandits as terrorists. However, Gumi is of a different opinion.
Sheikh Gumi with some bandits.
According to him, the acts bandits are committing in the Northwestern region have gradually over time become tantamount to terrorism because, whenever innocent people are fatal victims, it's pure terrorism. With this, Sheikh Gumi has given enough reason why bandits should be identified as terrorism. Over the past few months, a lot of people have been maimed in series of attacks orchestrated by these bandits. They even kidnap innocent civilians and demand for ransom before granting their release. Not even government officials are spared by these bandits.
On the other hand, Gumi gave reasons why bandits should not be declared terrorists. Gumi noted that, the Northeastern region is already under the attacks of Boko Haram, Southeastern region is already being destroyed by the activities of the Indegenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), and Southwestern region is still under the influence of Sunday Igboho. Therefore, declaring bandits as terrorists would put the Northwestern region in ruins sooner than later.
Interestingly, as Sheikh Gumi tacitly tried to justify his reasons why the government should not declare bandits as terrorists, he unknowingly revealed a more substantial reason why the government should immediately declare the acts of banditry as terrorism.
