The security situation in Enugu State seems to be getting worse by the day. Sadly, Enugu State used to be one of the most peaceful and secured states in the country, but has suddenly starting making national headlines for all the wrong reasons. If it is not attack on police checkpoints, police officers, police stations, then it will be a case of assassination or something other violent crimes.
Frankly speaking, this is no longer funny, and should not be treated with kid gloves. Yes, because the security situation in that state has indeed reached an alarming stage, and as such, requires urgent and drastic measures/actions, in order to tackle the problem effectively. And one of the drastic measures is for the Federal Government to deploy more Army troops to the state, to help in tackling the escalating security situation in that state.

Without mincing words, it is a glaring fact that the police cannot handle this situation alone, there's every need to complement the efforts of the police, which is by deploying more soldiers to that state. Yes, because the army has the capacity to confront such security challenges, of which we have seen them successfully done it in some other states in the country.
Meanwhile, it is so unfortunate that there's hardly any week that passes that one or two violent security problem(s) is not recorded in the state. In fact, it has become a trademark of the state in recent times, a state that not too long ago, prides itself as one of the most peaceful, conducive and secured states in Nigeria. It is so bad, that the story has changed for bad. Besides, what is most worrisome about the situation is the fact that, when you think you have seen the last of it, then these daredevil group strikes again.

For instance, Saturday Vanguard Nigeria of October 9, 2021, reported that unknown gunmen struck again in the state in question. The armed group attacked Aguobu Owa Police Station in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday, October 8, 2021. Though they were repelled by the gallant security operatives on duty at the station, but one of the police officers sustained a gun shot wound. Meanwhile, there are many other cases of violent crimes in the state, mostly perpetrated by the so called "Unknown Gunmen" and some other criminal elements terrorizing Enugu State and some other South Eastern states.
Meanwhile, in October 2021, Sahara Reporters reported that unknown gunmen struck again in the state. They attacked a security office of the Central Body Neighbourhood Watch, which is located in Ogrute, Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state. The same report revealed that two persons lost their lives during the attack.

Then in September 2021, the same unknown gunmen carried out an attack on a police formation in the state, killing two policemen in the process. According to The Cable Nigeria, the armed group attacked a police checkpoint mounted in Nachi, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State. And the list is seemingly endless.
Meanwhile, we have not talked about the high profile assassinations in the state, especially within this year. For instance, Vanguard newspapers reported that the former Enugu State Federal High Court Judge, Justice Stanley Chuks Nnaji, was gruesomely murdered by unidentified gunmen in Enugu State, in May 2021.

Same fate befell Professor Simon N. Ndubuisi, who was assassinated by unknown gunmen in Enugu State, on July 7, 2021. Prof. Simon untill his death, was the Managing Director and Chief Execitive Officer of the Scientific Equipment Development Initiative (SEDI), Enugu State. And a whole lot of others.
And, it is important that the situation is confronted now that it has not grown out of control. Meanwhile, there's no doubt that with the deployment of more Army troops to Enugu State, the security situation in that state will improve drastically, of which we have seen it happen in some other states in the country.

On the other hand, the fact that the military recently launched a new operation in the south east, which is code named "Exercise Golden Dawn" should not be a deterrent to the deployment of more soldiers to the state. Each group has different agenda and mission, and besides, the soldiers that will be deployed to the state will ensure that military presence is seen in most parts of the state, including surveillance patrol and also, mounting road checkpoints at strategic positions within the state.
And this must be done urgently, in order to tackle the problem as quick as possible, especially now that it will be easier to confront and tackle the security challenges bedeviling the State in review. Meanwhile, we shall be making a costly mistake if we treat these security challenges with kid gloves. Yes, these daredevil group must be destabilized and dismantled as soon as possible, before they begin to massively indoctrinate gullible youths in that state.
