2 Reasons Why Southeast Should Ignore IPOB's Threat Of Shutting Down The Region

Few days ago, the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB issued a statement to the Nigerian government threatening to shutdown the entire southeast region if its incarcerated leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not released by November, The Cable reports. The statement must be condemned and ignored by the Nigerian authority and the southeast people, including their leaders.

IPOB has no right or authority to issue such a frivolous statement because they have already been proscribed as a terrorist organization by the federal government.

Their threat should be ignored because of the following two extensive reasons.

1. They are already a proscribed organization

A proscribed group doesn’t have any authority over the court or the Nigerian government. In fact, listening to them is a total waste of time because their objective is to cause more harm to people, especially residents in the region.

Though the incarcerated IPOB founder has pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against him, and he is still being held in DSS custody. However, that should not give IPOB the right to be issuing threats all through the entire region as if they have the final say in the region. The law must be followed and due process must be observed.

A group that has been proscribed should even be hiding their faces because they are no different to Boko Haram terrorists in the north east. So, this is the number reason why they should be ignored.

2. They are not southeast leaders

Only the leaders in the region have the rights to make commands in the southeast, not them. Well, it seems IPOB has no regards for their leaders, that’s why they keep issuing unnecessary threats and orders in the region. They have taken every law into their own hands, leaving their leaders to be looking like the underdogs. This is why insecurity has turned into something else in the land.

However, they should know that by continuing with these acts they are undermining the region’s economic and social developmental potentials. The regions have more potentials than many places in the country, and only love and unity can make them discover it.
