The Arrest of an Arms Carrier On His Way to Jos Calls for Greater Vigilance by Security Agencies

The media reported yesterday that operatives of the Joint Task Force of Police and Federal Road Safety Commission in Nasarawa State intercepted and arrested a terrorist’s arms carrier by the name Likita Abubakar, a Fulani man, with 53 AK-47 magazine guns, 260 rounds of live ammunition, and N38,500 in cash. Abubakar was on his way to Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Suspected Fulani gunmen have perpetrated atrocious attacks on remote communities in parts of Plateau State in recent months with heavy casualty figures. Two weeks ago, the gunmen launched devastating attacks on 10 communities in Bassa Local Government of the State which culminated in the killing of over 70 persons and wanton destruction of 1000 hectares of cultivated farmlands, and burning of over 2500 units of houses. The coordinated attacks lasted for six consecutive days.

A few days after these attacks, some youths ambushed and killed 22 Muslim travelers in Jos. The incident was a reprisal attack.

In response to the worsening security situation, which many Nigerians feared could lead to a total breakdown of law and order, the state government declared a state of emergency on some local government areas to stem the tide of the attacks.Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong

Although we salute the eagle-eyed vigilance of the security agents in Nasarawa State for arresting the arms carrier, we must point out that the arrest represents a pointer that the terrorists are infiltrating Plateau State in small numbers to regroup and launch even more devastating attacks on communities there. The arms carrier’s disclosure to security agents that six of his gang members were already in Plateau State attests to this assertion.

The situation, therefore, calls for vigilance on the part of security agencies in Plateau State.

I want to believe that the concerned authorities have already swung into action to apprehend Abubakar’s six accomplices. The security agencies must be on red alert to avert another round of mass killing as it appears that the Fulani gunmen are hell-bent on wiping out communities in the state. They must never let down their guards; else we will be in for another round of senseless bloodletting in the state sooner or later.

To achieve the level of alertness and vigilance required to stop the wicked devices of these evil men, the authorities must give a premium to intelligence gathering. Citizens of the state must also help the security agencies in the intelligence-gathering process.

A wise man once said that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Nothing can be truer, particularly in this instance.
