Opinion: Why A State Of Emergency Should Be Declared In Anambra State

Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) attacked another security checkpoint in Anambra State a few days ago.

Many police officers were also injured in the shooting incident on Thursday evening, October 7, 2021, at a security post set up by operatives in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

The new attack came a few days after the rampaging gunmen attacked the residence of Joe Igbokwe, the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Drainage and Water Resources in Nnewi.

Unknown gunmen have continued to unleash terror in the South East by killing security agents and setting public buildings ablaze.

The Nigerian Army has launched a new operation codenamed Exercise Golden Dawn in the region to end insecurity and foster military-civilian relationships.

A few days ago, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, said that President Muhammadu Buhari might declare a state of emergency in Anambra State due to lingering violence in the state. The Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also supported Malami's statement.

However, the governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has clarified that President Buhari is not interested in declaring a state of emergency in Anambra. Obiano revealed this after meeting Buhari at Aso Rock on Thursday.

In my opinion, the continuous attacks on security agencies and public buildings justify the need for a state of emergency in the south-east, particularly in Anambra State.

Despite the ongoing military operation in the region, the unknown gunmen are still operating. This shows the level of insecurity in the region.

President Buhari should declare a state of emergency in Anambra as soon as possible to get rid of militants parading themselves as unknown gunmen.

When a state of emergency is declared in a state, the governor of the state and the legislature will vacate, and the president will deploy maximum force to tackle the insecurity in the state.
