For a couple of weeks now, Anambra State, in the South-East region of Nigeria, has continued to make the headlines for negative reasons. The once-peaceful state has recorded several cases of attacks and killings in recent times, by a group of unknown gunmen. Within the last two weeks, the gunmen have carried out several attacks and killings.
It should be recalled that not long ago, Doctor Chike Akunyili, a prominent son of the state, and husband to late Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Dora Akunyili, was shot and killed by a group of unidentified gunmen within the Nkpor area of the state. This is not to forget other notable attacks and killings by gunmen.
There is no doubt that unknown gunmen attack and killings were recorded in the South-East region a couple of months ago. However, government security forces were able to bring the situation under control. This was followed by the return of peace in the region until the recent resurgence of unknown gunmen attack and killings in Anambra.
Following this development, we may begin to wonder exactly what the gunmen stand to gain by killing people and destroying facilities in Anambra State. There is no doubt that everyone wants a better Nigeria. However, this cannot be archived with the barrel of the gun. Peace remains a necessary condition for development to strive. As such, there is a need for everyone to embrace peace.
It is only when there is peace, that we can be able to actualize our dreams as a people. As such, the barbaric attacks and wanton killings in Anambra, and other parts of the country must be stopped. Attacks on our people, and the burning down of facilities cannot bring about the development that we all desire. Therefore, the killings must stop for peace to reign
