This weapon was invented by William Mills, an English engineer born on 24th April 1856. There were other types of grenades (bombs) that were being used before William Mills invented the hand grenades in use today. The previously used grenades proved to be deadly to the thrower as to the intended target.
However, William Mills, through his Mills Munitions Factory in Birmingham was able to make a proper grenade which had a timer of four seconds, allowing the thrower to take cover before it explodes, and his grenade was with a lock.
His hand grenades were successfully used by the British and other Allies throughout World War I.
4. Man who invented AK-47
The AK-47 was invented by a Russian man known as Mikhail Kalashnikov. He was a tank mechanic in the Soviet military during World War II.
During the German invasion of the USSR in 1941, Mikhail Kalashnikov sustained an injury. He noticed that the Germans used superior firearms for the invasion so he started working towards inventing a gun that could match their weapons.
In 1947, Mikhail Kalashnikov successfully invented a gun which was named AK-47. In 1949, this gun became the official assault rifle of the Soviet Army after they saw the damages it could cause.
