Okoronkwo and one other officer were shot dead by the bandits during the attack. Another officer was also abducted by the gunmen. The officer is yet to be rescued or released by the bandits.
President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy by suspected bandits, saying that it was aimed at killing the morale of the military. The president added that the attack would boost the military's morale to quickly end insecurity in Nigeria.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Lucky Irabor, also vowed to go after the attackers and end insecurity in the country.
However, there are two important things to note during the burial ceremony in Abia State today.
1. The military paid the last respect to the fallen hero in Abia State today. A parade and other military activities were held at the burial ground in honour of the late officer.
2. The late officer was buried in his hometown in the presence of his family and friends. The Nigerian flag was presented to the family of the officer after he was laid to rest.
