The level of banditry in Kaduna state has become a worrisome menace to residents in recent times. Birnin-Gwari local government area of the state seems to be the epicentre as motorists can no longer ply the route linking the area with Kaduna metropolis without fear of falling victim to these unscrupulous elements who attack without remorse. A recent report revealed that some residents of Birnin Gwari are now fleeing their ancestral home, as bandits are having a field day after members of the Ansaru terrorist group who normally "protect" locals left the area.
However, the Governor of Kaduna state can do the following to curtail the activities of bandits or terrorists ravaging the area.
Firstly, the road linking Kaduna metro with Birnin Gwari should be repaired and put in good shape. It should be noted that the bad nature of that road might be a contributing factor to the frequent kidnapping on that route. Motorists plying the road must slow down as a result of the bad road situation, thereby making them an easy target for bandits.
Secondly, a large chunk of the forests in Birnin Gwari ought to be converted to a military barracks or base. If you know the geography of Kaduna state well, you will discover that Birnin Gwari is surrounded by forests, which is perhaps the enclave of these evil men—from Anara forest in Igabi LGA on the outskirts of Kaduna to Kumuku forest in Birnin Gwari, the route leading to this area is almost entirely a forest. The bandits occupying it might be forced to migrate if a part of it could be converted to a military base. Recall that the same strategy was used by Gov. Ganduje of Kano state when he converted a part of the Folgore forest to a military base, making it a peaceful place. In fact, this might be the reason why Kano state hardly gets cases of bandit attacks.
Thirdly, the use of motorcycles in Birnin Gwari and environs should be outlawed and strictly enforced. It has come to my notice that bandits usually use motorcycles to cause mayhem. If residents were stopped from using bikes, it would be very easy for the law enforcement agencies to distinguish between criminals and law-abiding citizens.
Conclusively, in the case of the Ansaru terrorist group preaching to natives of the area and hypnotizing them with their doctrine, the Kaduna state should start sensitizing locals to the dangers of aligning with this group of people.
