Recently there was joy around the country when the Federal Government took delivery of the last batch of the Super Tucano Jetfighter that was ordered from the USA. The jets are monstrous fighting machines that are expected to be a game-changer in the fight against terrorists in the country.

But some analysts have suggested that it could be deployed against unknown gunmen who have been terrorizing the South East in the last several months. But that may not be possible until one condition is met. What is that condition that must be met? That shall be the focus of this article.

The unknown gunmen must be declared a terrorist group first

One of the major conditions that the government of the United States gave before agreeing to sell the 12 super Tucano jet to Nigeria is that they will be used to attack terrorist groups only. In essence, the Nigerian government cannot use the newly acquired fighter jets to kill unknown gunmen in the South East until they have been labelled a terrorist group.

Though some people, especially in the North, have challenged President Buhari to go ahead and declare the unknown gunmen as a terrorist group the president is yet to do so.

Unfortunately, it will be almost impossible to fulfill this condition because the unknown gunmen are not a recognizable outfit with identifiable leaders.

At best, they are a ragtag group of criminals hiding under the cloud of rising insecurity in the South East to cause mayhem and carry out targeted assassinations against high-profile individuals.

More so, labelling the unknown gunmen as a terrorist organisation, to justify deploying the jet against them, could endanger the lives of ordinary people because they operate within the community.

Even though the government has at one point, used fighter jets against unknown gunmen in the South East, but if it does the same with the Tucano jets, it will amount to a breach of contract that will definite attracts sanctions from the United State.

So, the FG should only use the Tucano jet in the North East, while it deploys ground troops in the South East the crush the criminals called unknown gunmen.
