OPINION: Plans To Pay Ex-Biafran Soldiers Pardoned By Buhari Is A Good Move To Appease South East

There are plans by the federal government to pay ex-Biafran soldiers who had fought in the Civil War that took place years ago.

This disclosure was made by the Minister of Defense, Basir Magashi (rtd). According to a report by The Punch, Magashi stated that so far, about 102 of the ex-Biafran soldiers have been captured to be paid gratuity and other emoluments by the Military Pensions Board. This idea is a good initiation and it will help to appease the South East for obvious reasons since people of the region have always alleged that they are marginalized and not given enough sense of belonging by the federal government. This initiative will favour them in some ways.

First, President Muhammadu Buhari first granted presidential pardon to the ex-Biafran soldiers involved. The presidential pardon is also known as amnesty. It means that they have all been forgiven by the Nigerian government and would not be punished for fighting against the country in their initial bid to secede which later failed. This is a welcome development that will make the people of South East happy as efforts to give them more sense of belonging are being made.

Secondly, capturing many of the the ex-soldiers to be paid gratuity is another step to make the South East people happy. It will help to appease many of the people who have always recounted the horrors and losses they suffered in that infamous civil war. Many of them are still living with the scars and pains of the war. So, measures aimed at appeasing them and making life better for them such as the one the federal government has started are good initiatives.

Thirdly, this initiative will help to unify the country more by wining the hearts of more South Easterners. This move to pay the ex-Biafran soldiers gratuity will help to give many South Easterners a sense of belonging which can help to make them believe in the unity of Nigeria. The timing of the initiative is also strategic. It is coming at a time when the country needs more initiatives that can help to unify the people of the country even as many divisive factors raise their ugly heads.

Finally, it has also come in handy at a time when some secessionists elements in the South East are agitating to break away from the country. This measure will help to weaken the message of division spread by those who want to convince more South Easterners to support the moves to secede from Nigeria. Granting the ex-Biafran soldiers amnesty, paying them gratuity and other beneficial initiatives the federal government is bringing on board for the benefit of the people will make many South Easterners to believe in the unity of Nigeria. It will give them more sense of belonging and make them reject secessionist moves.
