[Opinion] How Herdsmen Attack, And Banditry Are Causing Untold Hardship For Millions of Nigerians

Aside from the Boko-Haram/ISWAP insurgents that are terrorizing the Northeast region of Nigeria, activities of some armed herdsmen, and bandits in various parts of Nigeria, have become issues of serious concern to the government and citizens alike. For a while now, the armed gangs have been accused of attacking people, and killing them with impunity. This has undoubtedly added to the country’s security woes.

While the bandits largely operate in the Northwest region, armed herdsmen have been accused of carrying out various degrees of attacks and killings in different parts of the country. Amid these attacks and killings, there have equally been reported cases of destruction of farms by some herdsmen. For instance, on July 6, 2021, the Daily Post reported an alleged destruction of crops worth 1 billion Naira in Plateau state by suspected herdsmen.

There was equally another report by the Vanguard Newspaper on January 7, 2021, about an alleged destruction of multi-million Naira Maize farm in Ekiti, also by suspected herdsmen. Sadly, confrontations between these Herdsmen and Farmers have been alleged to be responsible for many of the violent clashes between the two groups. Herdsmen have also been accused of kidnapping farmers from their farms. This is coming at a time when bandits in the Northwest are also kidnapping and demanding ransoms.

Just like the social universe is governed by the law of cause and effect, the herdsmen attack and banditry in the country, is undoubtedly causing untold hardship for millions of Nigerians. This is due to the fact that many people who are solely farmers, now find it difficult to return to their farms because of fear of being attacked, or even killed. While some whose loved ones were abducted by bandits, have been forced to sell off whatever they have, to raise the demanded ransom for the release of the abducted family member.

Apart from this, the continued herdsmen attack and banditry in the country, and destruction of farms by suspected herdsmen, have seen a drastic reduction in the quantity of food items being produced by farmers. The implication of this is that a reduction in supply came with an increase in prices. This is currently forcing families to spend more money on feeding. This has brought untold hardship to millions of people, particularly those that were managing to survive before the increase in the price of food items.
