Incredible features of the newly acquired Super Tucano attack Jets by the Nigerian Airforce

The Super Tucano, also called the A-29 or the EMB-314, is a development of the EMB-312 Tucano, produced in Brazil by Embraer Defence and Security. It is a light attack aircraft designed to be a low-cost system operates in a low-threat environment. 

It carries a wide variety of weapons, including precision guided munitions. Each wing can be loaded with 200 rounds of the FN Herstal M3P 12.7mm machine gun with a firing rate of up to 1,100 rounds per minute. It has five hardpoinys for weapons, and the maximum external load us up to 1,500kg. It is capable of carrying general purpose bombs and guided air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. It is also armed with MAA-1 piranha short-range infrared guided air-to-air missile from Orbita.

The aircraft has an imaging system used for targeting, navigation and target tracking. This system allows it to carry out attack and surveillance missions in the night.

The cockpit is all made of glass, and it is fully compatible with night-vision goggles. The aircraft is equipped with avionics systems from Elbit systems of Haifa, Israel, including a heads-up display, advanced mission computer, navigation system, and two 6x8 inches colour multi-functional LCD screen.

The pilot is protected with a Kevlar armour and the aircraft is provided with a zero/zero ejection seat. The canopy is electrically activated, and it is fitted with a de-icing system, with features a very strong and durable windshield, capable of withstanding a strike from a 4pounds birds when flying at 400knots. There is a Northrop Grumman Onboard Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS) installed too.

The Super Tucano aircraft is powered by the PT6A-68A turboprop engine, producing a 969kW power. The power plant is fitted with an automatic engine monitoring and control system. The Pratt and Whitney engine is rated at 1,600HP, and it spins a five-bladed Hartzell reversible pitch propeller. With a fuel capacity of 695 litres, it has an endurance of 6hours and 30minutes.

The A-29 Super Tucano can fly at a maximum speed of 593km/h and a cruise speed of 530km/h. It has a range of 4,820km and a service altitude of 10,670m. The aircraft weighs 3,020kg and has a maximum take-off weight of 5,200kg with two crews, the pilot and the navigator.
