Southeast Crisis: Why Soldiers Must Take Strict Measures During Operations

The Nigerian security forces deployed in the southeastern region of the country have all the right to take strict measures during their operations as a result of how delicate the situation has become. There are multiple reports of attacks on security formations, outposts and government facilities by the alleged 'unknown gunmen' terrorising the region. The safety and health of the law enforcement officers are paramount and of utmost priority. This mandate the use of strict measures to protect the security forces against further attacks by hoodlums or members of the proscribed organisation called the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The southeast crisis is affecting the economic growth and development of the region. Huge revenue generation is being lost to violence as a result of the disruption of economic activities by hoodlums. The proscribed organisation has recently imposed a Sit-At-Home order which prevents people from conducting businesses or moving from one location to the other. The timely intervention of security forces has helped in restoring normalcy and stability in the affected communities. People have continued with their daily activities without interruption or fear.

The way and manner in which violent agitators, hoodlums and members of the proscribed Eastern Security Network attack security formations and logistics outposts warrant the use of strict measures to prevent further breakdown of law and order. There is a need to maintain fragile peace and unity in the region so as to improve the economic growth and development of the southeast. Concerned individuals such as Mr Joe Igbokwe and other influential personalities called for the unknown gunmen to surrender to the mighty force of the Nigerian army and embrace peace.

No positivity will ever come out of violence. The hoodlums need to understand that the security forces will not relent until their menace is tackled. Democracy has provided the people with the opportunity to present their grievances and complaints to the National Assembly through their various representatives. This is the only way the legislative arm of government may deliberate and decide on issues relevant to the government.
