The recent effort by the federal government to pardon some ex Biafran soldiers is a solid foundation to restore peace, normalcy and unity in the southeastern region of the country. This should be a reason and a source of closure to people who constantly disagree with the rehabilitation and reintegration programs being offered to repentant Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast. This signifies that the security forces are exploring every option that will warrant lasting peace across the six geopolitical zones of the country. The pardoned Biafra soldiers will be rewarded with monthly gratuities to ensure that they have a stable lifestyle. Why then will people criticize the rehabilitation program of Boko Haram terrorists?
The repented Boko Haram terrorists and the ex Biafra soldiers have in a time worked against the interest of the country and broke several laws. Despite their crimes, the government feel compelled to grant them amnesty in order to secure a sense of lasting peace and to ensure that other members of the society learn from their mistakes. Nigerians should embrace any decision selflessly taken by the security forces to restore normalcy and stability in the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The security of lives and properties of people is the fundamental responsibility of all governments. The way and manner in which the federal government decides to tackle the issue of violent agitations, banditry, mass kidnappings and insurgency across the country should at least be given the benefit of the doubt. People should observe how impactful the processes are. This will prevent young people from getting brainwashed into joining violent groups or organisations.
