The recent rise in the activities of unknown gunmen in the Southeast is one that many should be worried about. Prior to this time, the Southeast has arguably never witnessed this high level of attacks on security agencies and facilities. But with the emergency of the unknown gunmen, the Southeast region has gradually become a place known for incessant attacks on security agents and facilities. This recent attacks has led to the death of both security agents and innocent citizens alike.
The government's response to the activities of the unknown gunmen in the Southeast has equally not helped. For instance, a 100 level student of the Imo State University was hit and killed in Owerri by a stray bullet from a soldier, while it was also reported by vanguardngr.com about how another stray bullet from jubilant soldiers killed a woman in her farm, around the Ukwu Orji checking point where the unknown gunmen had earlier on April 5, 2021, attacked the military checking point.
Looking at the way things are going on in the region, it can be discovered that the activities of the unknown gunmen is also taking the lives of unarmed and innocent people. Therefore, if these unknown gunmen are truly fighting for the interest of the masses in the region, the group should consider embracing peace, and put down their arms. By putting down their arms, this does not in any way, imply that they are cowards or have been defeated, but for peace to reign, and to save more lives from being lost unnecessarily.
It is true that the Southeast has already lost many lives to the activities of herdsmen before now, particularly in Ebonyi and Enugu States, and neither the police nor the army has been able to apprehend and prosecute any of the killers. But attacking security formations can only expose the region to more danger and attacks by criminal groups. Therefore, these unknown gunmen should as a matter of necessity, consider embracing peace and put down their arms to save more lives from being lost to what will end up to be known as "stray bullet".
