OPINION: Impacts Of NYSC Members In Community Development Are Inestimable

When General Yakubu Gowon established the National Youth Service Corps on the 22nd day of May 1973, he believed it would serve as an avenue to reunite, reconcile, reconstruct, and rebuild the nation after the civil war that nearly divided Nigeria. The former military head of state found it necessary to promote peace, unity, and progress to all the regions in Nigeria. NYSC has proven to have massive positive impacts on the remotest part of the country through the Community Development Service (CDS). File Photo

This CDS at its inception was aimed at exploring the vocational skills, creative ability as well as innovative capacity of corps members. Corps members are usually given automatic membership in a CDS group. In the group, members are to identify the needs of their host communities, bring such needs to the attention of the active community members and mobilize them to commence work on the project works. Corps members, through the CDS have been able to construct culverts, bridges, renovate and equip health care centers, classroom blocks, market stalls, etc. they had also carried out projects like HIV sensitization, awareness on the dangers of drug abuse among others. The federal government should not follow the suggestions to scrap NYSC, it should ensure improved security for the corp members in their various places of primary assignment.
