Could The Military "Exercise Golden Dawn" Bring Lasting Solution To Insecurity In The Anambra?

For some weeks now, Anambra state has continued to make headlines for the wrong reasons. It should be recalled that the state has recently witnessed several cases of attacks and killings by some unidentified gunmen. A few days ago, a prominent Doctor, Chike Akunyili, was shot and killed in the state by unknown gunmen. This was followed by the razing of the country home of Joe Igbokwe, an APC chieftain, and Senior Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor, on Drainage and Water Resources.

As if that was not enough, the gunmen equally attacked and burned a Police Station in Nnewi. The menace of attacks and killings in Anambra has become so alarming that it has attracted the attention of the Nigeria Military. It should be recalled that earlier today, Commander 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support), Col. Abdulkarim B. Usman, launched a new military operation in the state codenamed “Exercise Golden Dawn” (source: Vanguard News).

The exercise, which is expected to last from October 4th to December 23rd, 2021, is designed to tackle rising insecurity in the state. Following this development, we may begin to ask ourselves whether the Military “Exercise Golden Dawn” could be able to bring lasting solution to the rising insecurity in Anambra State. It should be recalled that this is not the first time that the Nigeria Military, would be launching an exercise in the South-East region.

Having carried out Operation Python Dance, and Atilogwu Udo in the past, without it ending the insecurity in the region, one may not be wrong to say that the newly launched Exercise Golden Dawn may equally not be able to bring lasting solution to insecurity in Anambra state, and the South-East at large. You will agree with me that what we see as insecurity is a product of some underlying issues. There are some causal factors behind attacks and killings in Anambra, and every other part of Nigeria.

On the other hand, the military as a force, would eventually be tackling the effect, and not the cause. In my view, this is the major reason why the military exercise golden dawn could fail to bring lasting solution to insecurity in Anambra. Arguably, a lasting solution to insecurity in the state, or any other part of the country, must be able to tackle the underlying issues behind the attacks and killings. It is only when this has been done, that I believe insecurity would become a thing of the past.
