An official said Imo State Correctional Prison was attacked by “unknown gunmen” yesterday 5th April 2021.
The total of 1,844 prisoners were freed when some gunmen attacked the prison. The attackers who stormed and vandalized the facility yesterday on Monday gained entrance into the yard by using some explosives to blast the administrative block.
An Eyewitness said they have arrived at the correctional Centre in their large number with several Hilux pick-up vans and Sienna Buses with a lot of sophisticated weapons and immediately engaged the security personnel on duty in a heinous gun battle between the two parties.
Recently 6 inmates have voluntarily returned to the Facility Centre while 35 refused to escape from the custody during the attack. Also some eyewitness says the unknown gun men used IEDs, RPGs, SMGs to shell the correctional facility before gaining the entrance.
President Muhammadu Buhari condemns the attack and urges end to anarchy. Meanwhile the Governor of Imo State said it is a reprisal against Imo government, and promise to tackle all sort of illegal activities in the state.
