Petrol Bombs: A Costly Crime By Unknown Gunmen

The unknown gunmen perpetrating violence in the southeast region of the country has again struck a police station in Imo state. The hoodlums made use of petrol bombs to cause the destruction of the critical security facility. This latest tactic signifies how dangerous, cruel and heartless the criminals have become. This is a costly crime that the security forces will not relent until all the perpetrators are apprehended to face the full wrath of the law.

The use of petrol to bomb a critical security facility may be considered an act of terrorism. This is exactly how Boko Haram started wreaking havoc in the northeastern region of the country. The unknown gunmen have made a costly crime because the use of bombs to target public property especially a security outpost is a prime crime that has so many implications. This begs the question "what exactly are the criminals after?"

The deployment of Special Tactical Command in the southeastern part of the country was aimed at tackling the increasing rate of violent activities and restoring normalcy, peace and stability in the region. But ever since the deployment of this special squad, the alleged unknown gunmen have been targeting security formations and outposts. The criminals have even attacked a correctional facility and freed many inmates from captivity.

When the Boko Haram organisation started their operations, they made use of petrol bombs to attack remote police stations and loot the weaponry. They used this method to gain more weapons to improve their terrorist organisation. It is unfortunate that the same tactic has been adopted by the unknown gunmen terrorising the southeastern region of the country.

Attacks on critical security facilities and formations may only destabilise the southeast. Violence never yields a positive result. The unknown gunmen and other violent agitators must understand this for peace and unity to reign in the region. The security forces are stepping up their games to tackle the challenges. For instance, the leadership of the Nigerian Army has recently launched a nationwide military operation targeted at neutralising security threats across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
