2 Key Points Lai Mohammad Raised As Evidence That Nigeria Is Winning The War Against Insurgency

Insurgency is one of the toughest challenges Nigeria is facing. Since the Boko Haram insurgents began their attacks in the North-East about a decade ago, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, while many more have had to run away from their communities to seek refuge in other places. Last year, Nigeria was ranked as the third most terrorized country in the world by the Global Terrorism Index, after Afghanistan and Iraq.

But the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed believes that Nigeria is winning the war against the insurgents. He said this during an interview he had recently with BBC's Focus on Africa. Why did Lai Mohammed say so, and why does he think that the country is winning the fight against insurgency? So we are going to look at two points that Lai Mohammed used as proofs to back up his claim.

1. The surrendering of Boko Haram members in the past weeks.

In the past weeks, ceaseless bombardments on the hideouts of the insurgents and other hardships have forced hundreds of Boko Haram members to surrender to the Nigerian troops. A few days ago, the Nigerian Army had announced that 1081 Boko Haram members have surrendered to the troops. The repentant insurgents were given clothes and food items, and it was reported that they would be rehabilitated before being reintegrated into society. That was just one of the cases of insurgents who have surrendered in the past weeks.

Lai Mohammed said the surrendering of bandits is evidence that Nigeria is winning the war against the terrorists.

2. The space now occupied by the insurgents in the North-East.

Lai Mohammed said that in 2015 when President Buhari came into power, the size of land that Boko Haram was occupying in the Northeast was almost the size of Belgium, and that the entire Northeast was a region that no one could go to. He said that schools, hospitals, and markets in the region were closed down because of the insurgents, but that the story is different now. He said that today the terrorists have been chased to a small area.
