Sokoto Killings: One reason why Sokoto State residents may burn more bandits in the future

The security stability of the country is very poor, so much so that rag-tag bandits were able to penetrate the Nigerian Defense Academy in Kaduna State, which is one of the most secured locations in the country. Nigerians have been complaining about how banditry is becoming a common experience in the country, and President Buhari should do the needful to execute maximum force against those who are hindering the progress of the nation.

Several people have been kidnapped who are still in the custody of the kidnapper after so many weeks. Others have been mercilessly killed by bandits and Boko Haram insurgents. In reality, rage runs through the veins of Nigerians who only want the chance to repay bandits and Boko Haram insurgents a hundredfold for what they have done to them.

Recently, news broke out that bandits who kidnapped and killed about 2 residents of Tangaza, Sokoto State, have been tracked down by several residents of the state and killed.

The angry mob decided to take matters into their own hands and it is quite understandable due to how much they have suffered in the hands of bandits for several months. They killed a total of six of the bandits after locating them. Though the security operatives arrested four, the residents disagreed with the arrest and said they should also be killed. The 4 of them were burnt alive (jungle justice).

In my opinion, there is one reason residents of Sokoto State may get used to burning more bandits in the future:

(1) Inadequacy of the Police Force's Security Activeness:

It is no news that the security forces tend to appear at a crime scene after the crime has been committed and irreversible. This is not really a proper way of protecting the citizens of a society.

In this case, the bandits had successfully kidnapped the 2 residents of Tangaza before the mob of residents tracked them down and killed the bandits. Had the security operatives arrived earlier, the deaths of both the bandits and the 2 residents would have been averted.

For this reason, more cases such as this may likely occur in the future unless there is a change in the way the security forces handle things in the country.
