Terrorism

If The ESN Is Behind The Insecurity In The South-East, It Should Be Proscribed As A Terrorist Group

Since the end of the dark moment of the Civil war that spanned from 1967 to 1970 in the South-East until recently, the region has never been in any form of major security-threathening challenges. But within a short time, everything iota of security that had hitherto existed out there has almost faded away.

Today, although, the Boko Haram/ISWAP Terrorists in the North-East and the Bandits in the North-West can be said to be committing absolutely all manner of heinous crimes in the two regions, the calibre of the acts of insecurity that are being perpetrated in the South-East in recent times is better left unimagined. And the fact that innocent and law-abiding citizens are being slain on a daily basis is as appalling as the crime itself. Imagine the unfortunate killing of a certain Chioma who was said to be an undergraduate student at the Nnamdi Azikwe University (Unizik), Awka in Anambra State by an alleged stray bullet which was fired by some unknown gunmen on Sunday. Besides, they also set the office if DSS operatives on fire on the same day.

Chioma - the murdered Unizik undergraduate

Apart from the above, they have seemingly concentrated on killing famous Igbo indigens, as well as vandalising public assets in the South-Eastern region. For examples, they have murdered the likes of retired Justice Stanley Nnaji, Philip Udala, Dr Chike Akunyili and Dr Lawrence Ezenwa all of whom were easterners, and Ahmed Gulak who was a Northerner. In similar manner, they have destroyed government facilities such as prison, police stations, INEC offices, NAFDAC offices, DSS office among others.

The reality of things in the South-Eastern part of the country now is that the residents are now living at the mercy gunmen and perpetual fear of the unknown who have turned the place into a living hell. And sad enough, the IPOB which is the umbrella group of the ESN is always denying every accusing finger that is pointed at the latter as the orchestrators of the criminal acts. But the fact is that the criminals (unknown gunmen) who have been captured and interrogated have confessed that they were members of the ESN. An instance of this was the case of the killers of Ahmad Gulak.

Thus, any further arrests of some of the unknown gunmen that are made again should be thoroughly investigated. And if if it becomes clear-cut that they are men of the ESN, it will then imply that the armed group is truly responsible for the insecurity in the South-East region. Therefore, it should be proscribed as a Terrorist group like the IPOB.
