How The Nigerian Military Can Generate Fund For Itself Like The US

Looks like the House of Representative is now interested in the military. The House is seeking alternative sources of income to fund capital expenditure and training for the Nigerian Armed Forces in its bid to transform the Nigerian military into the best in Africa. House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, said only 9% of the Armed Forces’ annual allocations goes for capital expenditure in the face of rising insecurity.

The House wants to create an exclusive five-year funding plan independent of the annual budgetary allocations for the Nigerian military. It aims to revamp the military through special training and provision of modern fit for purpose defense equipment to build a Nigerian military commensurate with Nigeria's position as Africa's biggest economic power. To stem potential partisan interference or corruption the bill proposes to have a retired governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria as Chairman.

Frigates, revamping our anti-submarine warfare capabilities that have eroded over the years, more modern equipment for the army and training to put it on the same level of professionalism with the Nigerian Navy and Air Force irrespective of size. The Nigerian military is rebuilding its capability and modernizing at breakneck speed. Exciting times for the Nigerian military. One way the Nigerian military can make a ton of money is with its defense industry. The Air Force has AFIT. The army has DICON and a Vehicle Manufacturing Company.

We should invest massively into this sector to transform Nigeria into a manufacturing hub with a focus on indigenously designed and developed weapons systems. We should establish strategic partnerships with local entities. Companies like Innoson can produce components or sub-parts. We should also establish strategic partnerships with foreign players to seek technology transfers to set up domestic manufacturing infrastructure. In 2019 China's electronic giant CNIEC wooed the Nigerian army to establish an assembly line for the manufacture of defense equipment to help Nigeria become to locally manufacture high tech defense equipment.
