Opinion: Why Gumi shouldn't have said Nigeria will end if Bandits are declared terrorists

According to a report published by Daily Post, popular Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi has on Sunday night, made a series of statements concerning the security challenges in the Northwest region of Nigeria, as regards to activities of Bandits, and how the federal government should deal with the challenge.

In his statement, Gumi claimed that the federal government of Nigeria should not declare the Bandits attacking and killing innocent people as terrorists because it will lead to the end of Nigeria.

Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, who serves as an intermediate between the government and Bandits and sometimes, as a mediator for those kidnapped, has in the past, come under criticism from some Nigerians. While others question why he is comfortable with his role as an intermediate, others wonder why he keeps speaking against in soft terms as regards the bandits.

Regardless of Gumi's position in Nigeria's fight against insurgency, however, he shouldn't have said Nigeria will end if the federal government declares Bandits a terrorist organization.

First, Bandits attacks have continued to lead to the destruction of lives and properties in the Northeast region of Nigeria. If we can recall, in July 2021, it was reported that Bandits shot down a Nigerian fighter jet. If this isn't an act of terrorism against the federal government, then I don't know what it is.

In my opinion, proscribing Bandits a terrorist organization will help to reinforce and intensify Military might and efforts in the fight against them. Contrastly to what Gumi said, this will not be an end of Nigeria, but a beginning of the country's liberation from the insurgency.

Secondly, Sheikh Gumi shouldn't have said Nigeria will end if Bandits are declared terrorists because such a statement is capable of undermining the dedication and commitment of the federal government in combatting insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

Bandits could take such statements as leverage to carry out more heinous crimes against innocent people and the federal government of Nigeria.

What is your opinion about this statement? Feel free to share with us.
