2 New Ways Buhari's Government Plans To Deal With IPOB After Vowing That Its End Has Begun

The Presidency told people of Nigeria that the trial of Nnamdi Kanu is the beginning of the end of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu is the leader of IPOB and he has been in detention of the federal government for some alleged crimes. His trial has resumed after he was brought back to Nigeria since he fled the country. Speaking on behalf of the Presidency, Garba Shehu, revealed that Kanu's trial is the beginning of the end of of IPOB as the federal government is redoubling efforts to designate it a terrorist group amid other plans to deal with it in more serious ways. This article will discuss two new ways the federal government plans to deal with IPOB according to the move Shehu talked about in his statement yesterday.

(1). The federal government plans to ensure that all its allies also recognize IPOB as a terrorist group. Before now, Nigerian government had designated IPOB as a terrorist group. But, IPOB denied being recognized as such claiming that the court granted their appeal. Since then, IPOB has carried on with its activities. In fact, its members engage in protests, rallies and other activities in different countries without being stopped by security agents.

Going by Shehu's revelation, the Buhari-led federal government wants to designate IPOB as a terrorists group which will be recognized internationally. It also wants to make sure that all its allies (such as the US, UK, Canada) and all other countries that Nigeria shares ties with will recognize IPOB a terrorist group and have no dealings with the group. The countries will also stop all IPOB related activities in their territories if the federal government succeeds with this plan.

(2). It plans to destroy IPOB's ability to gain or transact in foreign currencies. This plan is to weaken IPOB financially. Currently, the group gets money from individuals and groups especially those in foreign countries. But, with this new plan, the federal government wants to destroy IPOB's ability to get or transact in foreign currencies. This may involve ensuring that their foreign accounts are frozen.

Also, it may involve making it a serious crime to send money to the group in any way. Banning the accounts of IPOB in Nigeria will not be a problem if the plans to do so in foreign countries work out. Once it is tagged a terrorist group by Nigerian government, anybody that dares to send money to the group against all the warnings would be treated as a member. With this, the federal government wants to ensure that it suffocates IPOB financially. Will these plans work?
