Federal Government promises to pay Gratuities to former Biafran soldiers

The Federal Government has approved the payment of pensions to former Biafran veterans.

The Military Pensions Board (MPB) says 102 former Biafran soldiers among those pardoned by President Muhammadu Buhari will benefit from pensions and other benefits.

Defense Minister Bashir Magashi said the 102 people would currently benefit from pensions and other benefits, as many former Biafran soldiers had already died.

Magashi also urged other Biafran ex-servicemen who have not yet been identified and who have good reasons, to present themselves, so that they can be assessed and included in the system.

He made the announcement at a ministerial meeting to mark the launch of the 2022 National Youth Day celebrations in Abuja on Friday.

According to him, “It is a well-known fact that the current system of government is anti-corruption, so the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces Pensions are vetting veterans on a regular basis to consolidate the system in one place and block any leg that could be used to commit corruption.

"We will continue to consult with veterans through appropriate channels such as the Veterans Association, the Veterans Affairs Unit and the Military Pensions Commission to ensure that the government discharges all its responsibilities.”
